Therapeutic Action
Hypocholesterolemiante.
Indications
Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases
In adult patients without clinical evidence of coronary heart disease, but with multiple risk factors for it such as age, smoking, hypertension, low HDL cholesterol, or family of early coronary heart disease history.
Hyperlipidemia: Atorvastatin is indicated
1. as adjuvant to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo-beta-lipoproteins, and triglycerides, as well as to increase HDL cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial and non-familial) and Mixed Dyslipidemia (Fredrickson IIa and IIb types).
2. as an adjuvant treatment along with diet of hypertriglyceridemia in the Dyslipidemia type IV Fredrickson.
3. for the treatment of the primary dysbetalipoproteinemia (Fredrickson type III) that does not respond properly to the diet.
4. to reduce cholesterol, total and LDL-cholesterol in patients with homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia as adjuvant along with other cholesterol-lowering treatments (e.g.: LDL Apheresis) or in case of not having these treatments.
5. as adjuvant to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL-C and Apo-beta-lipoproteins in men and women (after menarche), 10 to 17 years of age, with heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia, and if after an adequate attempt with therapy based on the diet the LDL-C levels are as follows: a. LDL-C is greater than or equal to 190 mg /dl or b. LDL-C It is greater than or equal to 160 mg/dl and will: • there is a family history of premature cardiovascular disease, or • there are two or more cardiovascular risk factors present in the pediatric patient. Prior to the start of therapy with Atorvastatin hypercholesterolemia secondary causes must be ruled out such as: uncontrolled diabetes, hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, dysproteinemias obstructive liver disease, therapy with drugs which raises cholesterol levels and alcoholism. You must also perform a lipid profile by measuring total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglyceride levels. Atorvastatin has not been studied in the treatment of abnormal lipoproteins that are mainly with increase of chylomicrons (Fredrickson typos I y V).
